Sign in with your Google account

Nuxa opens the Google AI Studio key page in your web browser. Sign in, or create a free account.

Click “Create API key”

It's at the top right of the API keys page. If Google asks about a project, accept the one it suggests.

Click “Copy”

The copy button is next to your new key. It starts with “AIza”, 39 characters.

3Free account limits, in plain words

Free, with daily limits. Here’s what happens if you hit a limit, and what to do.

When you’ve used your allowance, Nuxa says:

You've reached Google's free limit for now. Wait a minute and try again (daily limits reset overnight), or choose another AI.

When the account has no credit, Nuxa says:

Google Gemini says your account has no credit yet. Add credit or a payment method on the Google AI Studio website, then click Test again, or choose a free option.

4Troubleshooting

Step 1 Sign in with your Google account

The page says it isn't available in my country

Google's free keys aren't offered everywhere. Choose a different option: Sign in with ChatGPT, or Ollama (free, on your Mac).

My work account is blocked

Your organisation may have switched AI Studio off. Sign in with a personal Google account, or choose another AI.

It asks me to agree before continuing

Tick the box to agree, then continue.

The page didn't open

Open your web browser yourself and go to aistudio.google.com/app/apikey.

The page won't load

Check that you're online. A VPN or work network may block it; try another network.

Step 2 Click “Create API key”

I don't see “Create API key”

Google moves it now and then. Look for “Get API key” in the menu on the left, or a “+ Create API key” button above the list of keys.

It asks me to choose or create a project

Choose “Create API key in new project”, or accept the project it suggests. It's free.

I already have a key

That's fine. Copy your existing key from the list instead.

Step 3 Click “Copy”

I closed it before copying

Most services show a key only once. Create another key and copy that one.

I can't find a copy button

Select the whole key and press ⌘C.

Step 4 Nuxa finds your key

Nuxa says it looks like a different kind of key

You may have copied a key from another service. Go back to the key page and copy the key again with its Copy button.

Nuxa says the key looks incomplete

Part of it was missed. Use the Copy button next to the key rather than selecting it by hand.

macOS asks whether Nuxa may paste

Click Allow Paste. Nuxa only looks at the clipboard when you click Paste key, or when you come back to Nuxa during this step.

Paste key does nothing

Copy the key again, then click Paste key. Or click into the box under the button and press ⌘V.

Step 5 Checking your key…

Google Gemini didn't accept the key

Copy the whole key again with its Copy button and paste it. If you deleted the key on the website, create a new one.

It says the limit was reached

You've reached Google's free limit for now. Wait a minute and try again (daily limits reset overnight), or choose another AI.

It says there's no credit

Google Gemini says your account has no credit yet. Add credit or a payment method on the Google AI Studio website, then click Test again, or choose a free option.

It says Nuxa couldn't reach Google Gemini

Check that you're online. A VPN, a work firewall or a content filter can block it; try switching the VPN off.

I'm offline

Setting up needs the internet (except a model that's already on your Mac). Connect, then try the step again.

I use a VPN or a work network

VPNs and work firewalls sometimes block AI services. Try with the VPN off, or on another network.

macOS asks for permission

Nuxa may ask to paste from the clipboard or to open a web page. Click Allow; nothing happens without your click.

Nothing seems to happen

Click Check again, or go Back one step and try again. If you're stuck, click Get help — it tells us which step you're on.
